What is LOINC?
LOINC (Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes) is a universal coding system for laboratory tests, clinical observations, and survey instruments. Developed and maintained by the Regenstrief Institute, LOINC provides a common language so that lab results and clinical measurements mean the same thing regardless of which system produced them.
Why LOINC Matters
Without LOINC, the same blood glucose test might be coded differently across hospitals, labs, and EHR vendors, making it impossible to aggregate or compare data. LOINC solves this.
